Meet The Maker: Dawn Wade of The Littlest Detail

Meet Dawn

When Dawn shared a video of her craft room several months ago featuring a WorkBox 3.0 and an Ultimate SewingBox side by side, we knew we had to go see it. She gave us the executive tour of her stunning space and we've been just giddy over here waiting to share it with you all! Her beautiful personality shines through her workspace and everything she creates. We are so excited to introduce you to this fun and vibrant woman!

Have you always considered yourself to be a creative person?

To me, being creative is a large part of who I am as a person. Without my creative side, I think I would be completely lost and well, just plain boring. Growing up, I was always fascinated by all things artistic. I loved to dance, draw, color, build stuff, sing, pretty much anything dealing with the arts was all enchanting to me. I remember my first ‘claim to creative fame’ was a drawing contest that was being run by a local public television company here in Nebraska. I was a HUGE fan of Sesame Street (still am), and it was Big Bird’s birthday. The contest was to make a birthday card for Big Bird and if they liked it, it would be shown on TV and you got a prize, a limited edition plush big bird and an autographed photo of the bird himself. Well, I won!!! I was SO excited! I was even more excited when I found out that my drawing was also featured in the local paper!! From that day on I was an ‘official’ artist, at least in the eyes of a 6 year old.

My passion for crafting first came with an unexpected 8th birthday present from my Grandma, a beginner cross-stitch kit. There were probably other kids at my 8th birthday party, but all I could do was sit on my Grandma’s lap and focus on the sound of her voice as she taught me how to cross-stitch. I was hooked! I pretty much spent my childhood taking any extra time I had with my Grandma learning new needlepoint and sewing techniques.

I also went on to help my Mom prepare for craft shows where I learned all of my hot glue gun skills - thanks Mom! Since then, my love for sewing, crafting and art grew into a full blown career and dare I say, lifestyle. I now enjoy crafts of all sorts including quilting, sewing, card-making, rubber stamping, scrapbooking, and jewelry making - you name the craft, I have probably tried it at least once.

Tell us about your previous workspace setup.

My previous craft space was a mash-up of so many different organizing systems that helped me organize absolutely NOTHING. While it may have LOOKED all polished and organized, it was all just hidden in boxes and behind closed drawers. Most drawers were full of complete randomness and it would literally take me HOURS to find what I would needed for one project. By the time I found everything, my creative mojo was completely gone. At times, I would be so overwhelmed by the amount of hunting I would have to do that I would just sit there with no creative mojo, no motivation, and no crafting. :: sad day ::

Why did you decide to purchase a WorkBox and an Ultimate SewingBox?

For me, the choice was simple. Because I am a multi-crafter, I needed to be able to have different dedicated stations in my craft room for my different crafts so I could be as productive as possible. So all of the paper crafting stuff was with the paper crafting and the sewing supplies was with the sewing supplies.

I also knew that I wanted to be able to display bolts of fun fabric and store my fabric scraps so the space also needed to also accommodate three bookshelves. I measured and then measured again just to be sure that I could fit both the Workbox 3.0 and the Ultimate Sewing box in my new space. And with fingers crossed, a to-scale sketch and a prayer or two, low and behold it ALL fit PERFECTLY!! I was ecstatic! I would be able to have the craft room of my dreams. It was almost as if the crafty angels were smiling down on me that day saying, You’ve got this girl, you’ve got this!

Your craft room is immaculate! Are you generally an organized person in other areas of your life?

I certainly try to be organized in every aspect of my life but while I am being creative, that’s a whole different story. It’s almost like I become this messy creative monster that can’t stop the craftiness to put stuff away. So I usually end up with a mess of supplies all around me until I end up with a working space that is about 6” x 6”. Luckily when we moved, I had enough room for both the WorkBox and Ultimate SewingBox and everything can be easily put away as soon as I am done using it. I don’t even have to get outta my seat!! Everything is at my fingertips, ready to go and I keep my workspace clean and free of supplies. Goodbye Craft Monster, Hello Productivity!

Tell us a little bit about the delivery and assembly process of your boxes.

I originally owned an Original Sewing Box and was absolutely in LOVE with it. But once I saw that pre-orders were being taken for the brand spanking new Ultimate Sewing Box and Workbox 3.0 I knew that an upgrade was in my future.

Then I saw the price tag. It was totally worth every penny but how was I going to come up with that kinda cash? CRAFT GARAGE SALE!! I knew had to purge a lot of craft supplies in order to A) no longer feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount supplies I had accumulated over the years and B) to really fill my craft room with the things I knew I would actually use and not just hoard. So why not sell those craft supplies I knew I wasn’t going to use anyways and buy myself something I knew was going to revolutionize my crafting!! After a few months of craft room purging and waiting, it was time for my boxes to arrive!! I seriously felt like a kid on Christmas morning.

Tell us about the behind the scenes. What does a typical day look like for you?

5:30am - Wake up and Check Pinterest, Social Media, and read my daily devotion - gotta get those positive creative juices flowing early!

5:45am - Shower and get my face on while listening to a fun or thought provoking podcast

6:30am - 4:30pm - Time to get to work - gotta girl boss it out and make some money...for more crafty supplies of course!!!

4:30pm - Come home, pet the kitties and make some dinner for me and the hubs

6:00 - 9:00pm - Time to get crafty and creative for my own stuffs! I love to make handmade cards and gifts for people so this is when that crafty magic happens.

9:00pm - 10:00pm - Decompression Time!! Nobody can be creative 24/7 so this is when I try to clear my head with some reading or TV time. That way I can wake up fresh and ready for another day of creating!

What are some of your other hobbies or interests?

I am a HUGE Hello Kitty and Kawaii (japanese for cute) fan. I also collect Pullip dolls. I currently have these dolls in my craft room to help inspire my creativity.

I am also a fan of costume making, dancing, and traveling with my hubby.

Why do you create?

I create because it is who I am, it’s part of my being. Creating is like breathing. It comes so naturally that sometimes, I forget that that is what I am doing, creating. For me, being able to create and give a handmade gift that the recipient is going to love is so rewarding. It’s like giving a small piece of myself to the friends and family that I love and care about.
